Akwaaba (Welcome!)

I am Gifty, a mother from Ghana. I am a seamstress by profession and come from one of the small villages of Adakulu in the Volta Region of Ghana.

My young family lives in Elubo, Western Ghana. I opened my shop, Nyamekye Stitches, in 2023. I design and sew custom dresses and clothing for my customers.

Growing up, I saw many young women like me who did not want to attend school and church because we did not have nice school uniforms and church dresses.

I realized the magnitude of this challenge when I was called as the Young women's president in my church. I realized that most young women feel very shy when they are not in the best of dresses. Sometimes, this feeling discourages them from going to school or church. Since the young women may be aware of the financial challenges of their parents, they feel uncomfortable asking the parents for new clothes. I decided to help by sewing church clothes and school uniforms for them when I could acquire the needed materials.

My husband, who has been an amazing supporter of this initiative, advised that we extended this project to the needy boys too.

I love to design and sew clothes, but the joy that comes with sewing for a needy young man and woman, and see them looking good in what i have designed, is breath-taking and amazing.
